New Years resolutions really CAN work

I got a letter from a woman I'll call Dora.  She said she'd signed up for the monthly Letter to Yourself about reminding you of your New Year's resolutions.  "I thought it was hokey and I knew it wouldn't make a difference for me.  I never keep my resolutions.  But, I thought, what the heck and tried it.  I can't believe what has happened so far, in just these few weeks of January."

She decided to not to let things pass her by.  She told how she used to be driving along a road, see something interesting, "a flower, a baby cow, an interesting shop," and say she'd like to stop, but kept going.  "I talked myself out of wasting time, turning around; I’d say, what's the big deal, and make lots of other excuses."

Just one week after writing out her resolution, she had an experience that "was mind-boggling."  She was getting into a friend's car and realized she had forgotten her sunglasses.  Not a terribly big deal, but it was sunny.  The friend asked if she wanted to turn around and go back to get them, they had only gone 2 houses away.

"I said, don't bother, but then remembered that darn thing I had written and said, 'Yup, if you don't mind.'  I was giddy; yes, I know it's really silly and a tiny achievement, but it did feel good.  I assumed that was a one-time thing.  But, then a few days later, I went outside, realized I was cold, started to tell myself it would be ok, I only had to walk a few blocks, and then thought of that Letter to Myself.  You got it, Karen.  I went back in and put on another layer.  I am SO excited, I just can't tell you what a big deal these little things have been for me."

She ended by saying that she is catching herself a lot now in a number of things that in the past she would let slide.  "...but the thought about that reminder coming back to me has been a big boon. And, I haven't even gotten one reminder yet!"
