Stop Picking on Procrastinators

Some people are planners; they plot out their days, weeks, months.  They have birthday cards ready for family members months in advance.

Others are last minute people.  They don’t look at directions to a conference they must attend until the morning of.

There actually should be no value judgment on this because that’s the way bodies are neurologically constructed.  Some people need the adrenalin push before they can act – hence, a last minute rush to finish a project or write a term paper.  For others, the pressure from the adrenalin is so intense they avoid it by being prepared well in advance.

There should be no value judgment because this is a behavioral style; there may not be anything personal when a person delays taking an action.  I reject terms like “procrastinator,” because that’s based on some ideal time frame for when something should be done.  And, for those who need the adrenalin, they really do have to have the push.  It’s true, people can learn to devise their own push.  This just means, to me, that a procrastinator hasn’t learned to devise her own push.

This comes to mind when I think about the women who have already signed up for Unique Retreats for Women Ready for Change.  It’s not happening until November 6.  That’s a long time away.  Registration at last year’s rate is only good until August 1.  Clearly, the women who have already registered have a neurological composition that can plan far in advance – without that internal push.

Thus, I anticipate on July 31 there will be a number of women quickly signing up.  But, even then, some who want to attend but need that adrenalin push may keep thinking about it, but not get around until the final deadline, sometime in October.

While you may be a “last minuter” most of the time, and often late for meetings or events, chances are some of the time when something is crucial, you find a way to get things done.  I mention this to remind you that you are who you are; your brain is set up in a specific way. Yet, you probably do come through on rare occasions when it is crucial to meet a deadline.  So, be kind to yourself.

And, now I have to get directions for the conference I’m attending tomorrow!
