Treat Yourself at Least as well as Your Plants
On the last day, Roxanne announced she had made a significant connection.
“I don’t treat myself as well as my plants,” she said, grinning as she told the following story.
“On garbage day last March, with the melting snow and cold, I noticed someone had thrown out two huge (2 ½ feet tall) poinsettias. The leaves looked great. I assumed it was discarded because Christmas was long passed, as were the blossoms.“On a lark, I lugged them home and put them on either side of my driveway. Then, I forgot about them, even though I drove passed them each day.
“In May, I happened to notice how awful they looked; the leaves were brown and drooping. I promise myself I’d throw them in the Monday trash.
“But, here’s the surprise. It rained all weekend, and when I went to put out the trash on Monday, I had two gorgeous green fully leaved poinsettias. I know it’s silly, but the leaves were so healthy, seemed to be smiling.
“Well, I forgot about this until this morning, as I was thinking about the retreat coming to an end. I decided this weekend was one full of nourishing rain that watered my dry droopy spirit. I had ignored myself, my emotional needs, the same as I had those plants.
Thank you everyone for helping to water me!
