Expectations of Women: Have they changed? For the Better?

As girls, we are told to Smile, to be likable, not to show anger, always be pleasant.

At least, girls of my generation (Baby Boomers) and probably even those as young as 35 or 40.

But, look, now at the women who make covers of magazines, cds, movie and clothing ads.  They look sultry, angry, bored, pouty.

Has society’s expectations for women gone way to the extreme?  Probably not, if we knew what these women’s lives were really like.  But, it does bother me to see their looks.

And, put that together with the sexy man now always needs a shave!  And, of course, don’t forget to be disheveled in dress.

An adorable 15 year old sent me photos taken of her for her school pictures.  She looks 22, pouty, sultry, and I was horrified.  But, of course, she  also looked gorgeous, so she was real happy.

I guess I’m showing my age, but it really gets to me.

Images of women in the media are so toxic that I try as much as possible to avoid them. I am sure you know the statistics about women and eating disorders, depression, disgust with our bodies, cosmetic surgeries. We are affected by these images in negative ways everyday and it shows in horrifying ways in our society.
